Every day, we deal with many life stress and problems that can bring us bad moods or feelings. Oftentimes, these moods turn into negative attitude which shows in our facial expression or with the way we speak.
I, too, have struggled to keep a positive attitude in the midst of life stress and chaos. Sometimes it even leads to depression which retains me from enjoying life.
In my family, most people are idealist and pessimist. So growing up, I was accustomed to negative thinking and feeling. It became my habit to see the negative things rather than look at the bright side. This kind of mentality made it hard for me to make friends and build good relationship with people. It also made it hard for me to get contented with my life. I was always looking for reasons to feel unhappy with my life by looking at what I don’t have instead of being grateful for what I do have. As such, it was hard for me to focus on succeeding because my negative attitude always comes up which leads me to quitting before I even succeed. I continue to struggle and fail because of my negative attitude until one day; I realized what’s keeping my happiness and success in life. It was until I learned the importance of having a positive attitude when positive things started to come in my life.
I learned the importance of having a positive attitude the hard way. It was when I was struggling with many life crisis and was in total depression that I started reading self-help and motivational.
Attitude is Everything
One of the books that helped me changed my perspective about my negative attitude and how I response to life struggles was “Wisdom for the Way: Wise Words for Busy People” by Mr. Charles Swindoll.
The book was given to me by my aunt who was a nun. She gave it to me as a gift because she knew I was depressed and she wanted to help me.
This particular phrase is what have changed my viewpoint and have taught me the importance of positive attitude:
Attitude is everything. The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company… [An organization]… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes.
Whenever I start to feel and think negative again, I go back to this phrase and read it over again to remind of the importance of attitude and how it affects the results of my life.
The message is simple about attitude and success/happiness. They are in direct proportion. When your attitude is high (positive), your happiness/success is high, and vice versa.
4 Steps in Developing a Positive Attitude
1. Develop a habit of looking at the bright side
Negative attitude is a habit which was developed by repeated negative thinking and feelings. You can only alter it by developing a new habit of consciously and consistently thinking and feeling positive in any scenario.
2. Count the things you are grateful for
To help you build the habit of positive attitude, learn to count your blessings, the things you are grateful for in your life. Writing it down is an effective way of doing it.
3. Spend time with positive people
Our attitude is often influenced by our environment. This is why it’s crucial that we choose the environment we hang at, and the people we spend our time with. If you want to develop a positive attitude, spend more time with people who have a positive attitude and outlook in life. They’re attitude will eventually influence you to become positive too.
4. Read motivational books or articles
Another sure way to help you develop a positive attitude is to start reading motivational books or blog articles. Do this at least once a day to be able to remind you of the importance of keeping a positive attitude.
