Have you tried riding a roller coaster? How was the experience?
Personally, I love riding roller coaster. One of my favorite places to hang out, whenever I feel like I want to have fun and relax, is through visiting an amusement park. I guess you can say that my child-like spirit and attitude are still intact. But apart from the fun and breathtaking feeling I get from riding a roller coaster, what I enjoy most about it is the lessons and realizations I get from such experience. And one of those realizations is seeing life as a roller coaster ride.
Roller Coaster are addicting because of the bliss, freedom, risk and courage that each person experiences when he or she dares to ride.
In this article, I’d like to share my analogy why life is a lot like a roller coaster ride.
Before I ride the roller coaster, I can hear my heart beats or pumps so fast and loud. Thoughts of fear, discomfort and risk are floating in my head. I’m just human, roller coaster still scares me. However, I don’t let my fears over power me.
Just like “Life Roller Coaster”, before we reach the bliss of the success we are aiming for, we are faced with fears, discomfort and doubt of the risk we are about to take. That’s why a lot of us stop before we even start. The thought of the risk and getting out of comfort zone scares us too much. So we choose to abandon what kind of success and bliss we really want in life. And instead, we just settle for what is safe. We choose to be unhappy and endlessly complain on how difficult our life is. But if you want to start enjoying the ride of Life Roller Coaster and Live Life to the Fullest, you have to:
1. Get Out of Your Comfort Zone and Be Uncomfortable
Albert Einstein have said,
Insanity is doing things over and over expecting different result
If you are sick and tired of your unfulfilled life, and is eager to create positive change, stop doing what you normally do. Obviously, if up to this time it still gives you the same misery and unhappiness it only means it’s not going to give you the happiness tomorrow. If you want to change your negative circumstance, start doing things differently today. Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. Being uncomfortable is normal, because that means you’re making progress. It’s not as scary as you think, actually it’s much scarier to be where you are now and continue being unhappy.
2. Take Risk
A lot of people don’t want to ride “Life Roller Coaster” because they are afraid of the risk included. But what’s more riskier to risk, living your whole life wondering with “what ifs” or enjoy the ride of failing yet experience happiness you can never experience if you didn’t take chances. Well, a lot of people are choosing the former, that’s why there are more people who are unhappy in life instead of enjoying “Life Roller coaster” ride.
3. Face Your Fears and Experience Freedom
When we let ourselves succumb into fears, we are letting fears take away our freedom. If we want to achieve freedom, we have to face our fears. Unless we do, we’ll be forever locked into our own miseries.
Once I’m in and the ride starts to roll, I can feel my palms sweating really cold as the roller coaster is slowly climbing up. The ride uphill wasn’t tough, but the thought of the upcoming downhill does scares me.
Just like in “Life Roller Coaster”, whenever we are in our normal comfort zone doing our usual routine, we feel safe and easy, yet we fear so much negative things that may cause our life to fall down, even if the probability of failure is too small in reality.
If you want to enjoy the roller coaster ride and “Life Roller Coaster” be careful of your thoughts. Eliminate negative thinking, such of fear and doubt, and just enjoy the ride. I’m sure; it’s not as scary as you think it is.
As the roller coaster speeds up, it drastically falls down. For me, this is the scariest yet most enjoyable part of the roller coaster ride. So it’s true that pain pleasure do co-exist. And honestly, it does.
Growing up, I’ve realized that the world is indeed made in balance. Like if there’s good, there’s bad, if there’s joy, there’s sadness, so if there’s bliss, there’s fear and lastly, if there’s success, there’s failure.
If you want to enjoy the ride of “life roller coaster”, you have to accept its balance state. Once you accept this truth, the more you can enjoy the ride.
My second favourite moment upon riding roller coaster is the moment it curves and turns you upside down.
“Life Roller Coaster” does give us moment where our world is turned upside down. I’ve experienced such quiet a lot of times already. At first, we resist such curve, so become unhappy about it, yet as days goes by, we realize that we are more happier after the curve or the opposite, we are unhappier.
The most tragic thing we’ll ever do in life is to expect things to be perfect. It will never be. Instead of complaining and expecting things to always go our way, why not open ourselves to be more flexible and just enjoy the ride. Believe me; once you open yourself, the ride gets more wonderful.
For many, this is their favourite part, because that means the ride is over. They’re finally back to safety. On the other hand, few people find this part exciting for they’ll go down and ride again.
In “Life Roller Coaster”, average people are those who stop after the first ride, while few successful are those who ride again. This is why only few succeed in life. Because only few are brave enough to take risk, face their fear and are hungry to get out of their comfort zone. For once you are open to do these things, you are bound to find success in your life. And at the end, you’ll be able to say, you had an awesome and wonderful ride.
For a finale, I want to quote this phrase from one of my favourite person, Anthony Robbins:
“Live life fully while you’re here. Experience everything. Take care of yourself and your friends. Have fun, be crazy, and be weird. Go out and screw up! You’re going to anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don’t try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human.”
