Take the First Step

In actual life every great enterprise begins with and takes its first forward step in faith. ~ Friedrich Schlegel

Oftentimes, we have dreams and desires that we want to achieve, yet we are afraid to take a step towards it. We may be filled with doubt of success or we fear failure. Sometimes we just don’t want to take the uneasiness of taking action so instead, we just choose to settle with what’s currently comfortable to us.

In my study of the lives and attitudes of successful people, almost 100% of these men and women have said that they achieved their success because they courageously took the first step to make their dreams a reality. In their first step, they brought with them their focus, commitment and drive to pursue their dreams.

Are You Waiting For The Right Time?

When I think about taking the first step, I remember an event in my life when I learned to let go of my mentality of waiting for the right time. The change in my mind-set I owe to Mr. Napoleon Hill’s book, Think and Grow Rich. Mr. Hill has said,

Don’t wait. The time will never be just right.

In the beginning, such phrase was hard for me to accept because I was accustomed to the belief that before you make a decision or take an action, you have to ensure that everything is well-planned. So what happen is that time passes me by and I haven’t taken a single step towards my plan.

As I continue to plan and wait for the right time, nothing happens in my life. Success has been out of my reach.

When I took time to notice and accept my “waiting for the right time” attitude, I decided to change my perspective. When I started my own accounting firm business, instead of ensuring that everything is perfectly planned and launch at the perfect time, I changed my approach by launching the business and then learn from the operation and adjust along the way. And I am glad that I did.

Now my business is running, clients are coming in and I already hired an employee. It’s not perfect, but it is manageable. And I do hope someday it will reap the success it deserves.

The lesson I want to share in this blog article is the importance of taking the first step towards you dreams, goals, plans or desires. Don’t wait for the right time or when everything is perfect before you take action because the time will never be right or perfect.  Have courage to get out of your comfort zone and learn along the way.

For a final note, let me leave you this thought from Mr. Ralph Waldo Emerson:

All great masters are chiefly distinguished by the power of adding a second, a third, and perhaps a fourth step in a continuous line. Many a man had taken the first step. With every additional step you enhance immensely the value of your first.
