You got a dream… You gotta protect it. People can’t do somethin’ themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want somethin’, go get it. Period. ~ Chris Gardner, The Pursuit of Happyness
The movie, The Pursuit of Happyness, is the type you will keep on watching over and over again yet you will still feel changed afterwards.
The Pursuit of Happyness is the story of a man named Christopher “Chris” Gardner (played by Will Smith) whose rag to riches story will inspire and motivate you. The movie circled in the part of Chris’ life story back in the early 1980’s when he experienced many life struggles and crisis a man can experience in a lifetime, such as getting divorce, raising his 5-year old son alone while being homeless, jobless and penniless, as well as getting jailed for not paying parking tickets. Most of us may never experience some of these crises, but for Chris, he was able to experience all these in just a year.
His unfortunate situation started when he traded his job, and all their family savings, to start and build a business on his own. Unfortunately, however, his business didn’t become as successful as he foreseen it which resulted to financial problems that eventually led to all the crises I mentioned.
But what you’ll be amazed in Chris’ story was his attitude. Because instead of feeling miserable, negative and hopeless, he was able to handle the situation with positive attitude, drive, courage, perseverance and determination. He didn’t lose hope and continued to pursue happiness and success, the light at the end of the dark tunnel of his life. His attitude eventually led him to the success and happiness he was aiming for.
About The Movie
The Pursuit of Happyness was a blockbuster hit drama movie in 2006, and it gained a lot of positive feedback even from top critics. It is based on a book written by Chris Gardner himself entitled, The Pursuit of Happyness, which was also a best-selling on its own.
Chris Gardner was played by Will Smith, who did a very good job in portraying his role, together with his son, Jaden Smith, role playing as the 5-year old son of Chris Gardner, who was also very effective in acting even at a very young age.
Personally, there are two scenes in the movie that struck me the most:
First was when he was reflecting about the definition of happiness. In the midst of his life crises, he recalled what Thomas Jefferson said,
We hold these truths to be sacred and undeniable, that all men are created equal and independent, that from that equal creation they derive rights inherent and inalienable, among which are the preservation of life, and liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. – Thomas Jefferson
He began to think that Thomas Jefferson was right, happiness is a continuous pursuit that which you may never have. I felt his sadness and frustration when he said that because I can somehow relate to it. Indeed, happiness is to be pursued. Life will always bring us situations that can bring us down and make us suffer, but it is our determination to still continue pursuing happiness that will make a difference in the result of our life.
Second was when he was walking in the streets and he saw the smiling faces of happy people. He was both envious and curious about how happy they were. He started to wonder how and what makes them happy. So he didn’t hesitate to approach a man and asked him two questions:
1) What do you do?
2) How do you do it?
That moment changed his life around and opened a great opportunity that led him out of his life crises. Such scene reminded me of the importance of being open to possibilities and opportunities especially in times of difficulty.
Many of us handle setbacks negatively, we begin to lose confidence with ourselves, we lose hope and we stop taking action. Sometimes we even condemn or criticize those who are happy and succeeding in their life. But Chris was different; he was open to learn from those who are able to achieve happiness and success in their life. He listens to them and he does everything to achieve what these people accomplished. And such attitude helped him rise above the crises of his life.
I strongly recommend this movie to anyone, especially to people who are in the midst of life crises and struggles. Or just to anyone who wants to be inspired and motivated to pursue life’s success and happiness. It’s a movie that should be included in your book, movie or DVD collections which you can watch over again.
